Portland area chimney repair complaint

COMPLAINT: Frank Delgado, Beaverton, Ore.

"Troy Davis, owner of Mr. Chimney LLC, told me my chimney's damper was broken and would cost $2,500 to replace, but that he could install a cap damper for $550. Given the alternative, I told him I would take it.

"When I researched the unit, I found a cheaper model for $167. So, I asked his assistant to hold off on the order before it could be placed. Since then, I have canceled the order and asked for a refund three times. I have yet to receive any confirmation."

DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I would like a $90 refund from my deposit"

STATUS: Resolved
Editor's note: The member told Angie's List that Mr. Chimney has sent him a refund check and considers the matter resolved.

Portland area tire service complaint

COMPLAINT: Merrick Reburn, Gresham, Ore.

"I've purchased several sets of tires from America's Tire. When I buy the tires, they come with the manufacturer's warranty, and I can buy an extended warranty through the store. Part of the service included is for them to inspect the tires, check their air and balance them.

"I had my winter tires taken off and others put on. Afterward, my car handled terribly; it shook. I thought it needed an alignment, but that didn't help.

"What it came down to was going to another store thinking the struts were bad, but the dealer confirmed there was nothing wrong there. He said it was belt separation in the tire, so I took my car back to America's Tire to let them know.

"They showed me that the tread was worn unevenly on a couple tires, and the warranty is only good if the tread is still good. Since I'm there about every month, I asked why they hadn't noticed this and brought it to my attention.

"Their tire inspection is part of the warranty service and is meant to catch problems early. Because this problem had gone unnoticed, it became a larger problem, and I had to get new tires.

"I was given a small allowance on the new tires but not what I would have received under the warranty. I had to buy four new tires, because my vehicle is all-wheel drive."

DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I would like a refund closer to what I would have received had my warranty been honored, or I would like a discount on tires in the future from America's Tire."
